The 2008 Downtown Christmas
Celebration
For the first time the
Downtown Community Christmas event was combined with Crossroads
Mission's Christmas celebration and the result was a huge
successful event! We served hundreds of people a delicious
turkey meal with all of its trimmings, desserts, and drinks.
There were presents, snow-cones, cotton candy, jumpers, and
crafts for the kids, and our entire merchandise from the 2nd
Chance thrift store was on site to be given away to all who
attended.
Thank you to all of our
donors and friends, volunteers and staff! None of this
would be possible without your help. Here is a video and
pictures of some event highlights. We hope you enjoy them!
The children got gifts, snow-cones and cotton candy
There was a craft booth for even more fun
& face painting
And 3 jumpers!
There were happy children all around!
And some happy adults that got free clothes for all their
family
Many took blankets to help with the winter cold
We also had fresh produce available
But mostly, it was happy and thankful people...
Who shared Christmas with us.
What a blessing it was!
Thank you to all of the volunteers and
donors that made it possible.
Here are some pictures for you to remember the event, or just in
case you missed it. November 25, 26, &
27, 2008.
We started all three days in prayer circle with all of our
wonderful volunteers.
As soon as prayer was over there were people waiting at the
food line.
The first day we served Mexican food and roast beef on day
two.
We had delicious menudo!
The tamales were a big hit, too.
There were many people at our tables.
This year we set up a full size thrift store and we gave it
all away free of charge.
The Humane Society was on site giving shots to pets free of
charge.
There was also a veteran "stand down" servicing all homeless
veterans.
Among the other services available were the free haircuts.
We had to move everything inside on day 2 because of the
rain.
Our bike racks were full from all the guests that rode them
to Crossroads.
The chapel was turned into a temporary dining hall.
The dining room was also full. Somehow, we were able
to serve everyone!
A guest of Crossroads and volunteers peeled potatoes on day
2.
The thrift store was moved inside. It was crowded but
it worked.
On Thanksgiving day we served a traditional turkey dinner.
The weather was nice again and we were even able to have
live music outside.
There were many children who enjoyed the food and especially
the desserts.
We had complete families celebrating Thanksgiving with us.
And many of our homeless friends joined us for all 3 days of
Thanksgiving.
Our Annual
Birthday Party for the Homeless
What
a great time we had during the Birthday Party for the
Homeless on August 30th, 2008! We had cake, ice cream,
root beer floats, presents for all, and delicious
cheeseburgers. The shelter and the chapel were
decorated with balloons, streamers and colorful signs,
and we even had two piñatas for the kids and the kids at
heart!
We thank all of our donors who
made this wonderful celebration possible! Some of
our guests said that this was their very first birthday
party and they were certainly making the most of it.
We invite you to read
MYRA'S BLOG to read more
about that day. Here are some pictures of the
event - enjoy!
The 5th Annual Soup-er
Celebration of Hope was a great success!
February 22, 2008
This
year's Soup-er Celebration of Hope was a great success
thanks to all of our donors and participants. We
had many agencies represented, and some even provided
their services during the event.
For us, this event is especially important because it
provides a means to our clients, guests, and friends to
learn more about the services available to them
throughout our community. Over the years, we have
learned that in order for an individual or family to
achieve success and life transformation, there needs to
be a partnering with caring individuals, churches,
organizations, and companies that are able to provide
for all their service needs.
We hope you
enjoy seeing these snapshots of the event:
People started lining up for the delicious hot-dogs,
chili & soup meal
Many had their belongings with them
It was a beautiful day for an outside meal
There were clothes the people could get free
There were also blankets
Some even brought their pets to get exams and
vaccines
One of our rooms was turned into a salon/barbershop!
Many had not had a cut in months
It was a one of the busiest areas of the
celebration!
LOOK WHAT A DIFFERENCE A HAIR-CUT MAKES!!!
